Fluid coupling is used in the industry as a power transmission product. The main function of Fluid coupling is to transmit the torque from one shaft to other shaft. Fluid coupling provides smooth starts to the equipment. The abrupt start usually associated with electric motor is cushioned by fluid coupling. It assures very smooth start and protects the machine in case of jamming or overload because the fluid coupling acts as torque limiter the inertia of the motor rotor is not transmitted in a damaging way In case of overload, the transmission torque is limited by the fluid coupling and thereby providing protection to the electric motor and connected machine. In case of extended jamming period fusible plug blow off will empty fluid coupling thereby disconnecting the output from the input and protecting both driving and driven equipment.
There may be problem of overheating while using fluid coupling. There are several factors that affect the performance of fluid coupling and cause overheating. One common problem is misalignment of fluid coupling that may be responsible for overheating. Therefore fluid coupling must be aligned. Keep the record of alignment and temperature for future reference.
Another reason for overheating may be incorrect oil filling angle and grade of oil. Correct grade of oil as specified by fluid coupling manufacturer must be used in order to ensure trouble free operation of fluid coupling. Oil filling angle should be according to load requirement. Fluid coupling manufacturer’s operation manual should be referred to get correct oil filling angle according to load requirement.
Another reason for overheating may be fluctuation in load condition or heavy load. Fluid coupling should be operated on specified load condition as per recommendation of fluid coupling manufacturer. Collect the correct load data in order to make proper selection of fluid coupling. Fluid coupling is to be selected according to load data to avoid performance problems.
One more reason for overheating of fluid coupling may be damaged internal part. Therefore check the internal part of fluid coupling and replace the damaged part with new one. Also find out the reason for failure or damage of part in order to avoid repetition of same problem.

ReplyDeleteThere was a problem that fuse plug is blown off very frequently and we have beeb replaced fluid coupling with new still the problem is exit. What could be the cause of coupling overheating. There is no change in load, oil filling and alignment issue.

ReplyDeleteThere was a problem that fuse plug is blown off every 3hrs running when empty load in the elevator past 4 days only . Oil filling angle is same and qty also maintained well.vibration of the g/b and motor is normal.please suggest me what are the points I have to check and give me the solutions.
